Network Help | | | | Enable only Internet TCP/IP Protocol | TCP/IP and Windows "File & Printer Sharing" cannot cohabitate on the same Ethernet adapter. It's very difficult to keep the two separated. Run "Windows Networking" e.g. NetBEUI, File & Printer Sharing on a separate LAN (each workstation will have two Ethernet adapters) - yes it's a big project.
Control Panel's Administrative Tool's "Services" is a place to look to remove unwanted services that compromise security, (Messenger, TCP/IP NetBIOS helper, Windows Management..) The disabling of these actually makes your computer run better. Services always run and start automatically with your computer.
Advanced TCP/IP options allows you to further restrict TCP/IP traffic to a few common ports (25, 53, 80, 110, 443) To look in this most difficult of areas to see, go to TCP/IP Properties, Advanced, Options..
Internet Explorer and Outlook use Internet Options which can be further secured. Start by adjust to High for each of Internet, Intranet and Restricted Sites and reselect checkboxes as shown. These settings will still allow most sites to operate normally.
Use Mozilla Firefox as an alternate browser to Internet Explorer. Firefox works just as well and is actually performance tuned for appropriate security options right out of the box with the ability to view both Netscape and Internet Explorer websites - equally well without either of the two's hang-ups.
Secure Outlook by viewing and sending email as "Text Only" - Microsoft Recommends this setting. See this page for more Outlook Infomation
What IS email: Email is the transmission of text messages and the founding cornerstone of the Internet. Business email users send text messages containing, if needed, an explanation of an attached file. This file could be any format.
HTML email is generally not recommended for business use. HTML email is highly suspect and filtered in many corporate firewalls. HTML email is often considered or associated with a solicitation and makes the size of the message 5 to 10 times what it needs to be to encapsulate all that code.
Microsft Word, when used in sending an email creates an especially long HTML document. Know what your software is sending out and send it as TEXT! (ms-html is the equivalnet of a 13:1 page expansion ratio if printed out and sent as a fax.)
